http://www.aidsmap.com/en/news/7FF668F7-2B5D-4D7A-9EB9-D6C8BFD0396B.asp

Excellent study by UCSF showing that when men living with HIV get syphilis, their HIV viral load often spikes, and their CD4 (immune system cell) count drops significantly. This spike in viral load seems to remain for some
time even after syphilis is successfully treated. This means syphilis is bad news for men living with HIV, and it also means HIV+ men with syphilis are probably much more likely to transmit HIV if they have unprotected sex
or share needles. Untreated, Syphilis also can progress rapidly in men living with HIV to permanent blindness and nerve damage. Syphilis is easily treated, and sexually active men should get tested for syphilis every 3 months.
